During my residency in Durban with the Dala collective, I went to the Cato Manor township where black South African families live. Locals travel to Warwick Junction every day to catch a bus and get to work in the city. They shop in the market, where the products are much cheaper than in shopping malls. They don't really benefit from the evolution of post-apartheid South African society.
